HEMLOCK
FORESTS - MARKER #6
The hemlock forest is
one of several distinct tree communities in the Smokies. Hemlocks
prefer a cooler, more moist environment than some of the other
trees. Many hemlocks under certain conditions reach 5 to 6 feet in
diameter. In the summertime the hemlock forest offers cooling
relief from the sun. In the winter the greens and gray of the rock
are set off beautifully against freshly fallen snow. This area
becomes a winter wonderland in the winter.
