WHERE DID THEY GO? - MARKER #9

Many families from the Roaring Fork community moved down the mountain to Gatlinburg when the park was established. A few of the families were given lifetime leases on their homes because they were too old or too sick to move.  A few others were given special permits to allow them to stay on and farm but this didn't work out well at all. The people couldn't cut firewood, hunt or fish in the hills. Staying on was next to impossible. Some of            people didn't stay on in Gatlinburg they followed the logging industry since the logging boom was over here. Some of the young men followed their dream to go to Detroit and work at the Ford place.  The people of this time and place can still come home and see the beautiful land that remains in tact. They can share with their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren about the good times and the hard times of the once Roaring Fork Community.
