MARKER #4:
CHESTNUT LOGS
Driving
through this area for the next few hundred feet you will see that
the roadside is littered with fallen chestnut trees. These trees
were killed by a blight in the early 1900's, yet you will see many
of the stumps left. You will see new growths from the stumps but
like many hereditary diseases passed from generation to generation
these sprouts will also succumb to the disease of the parent tree.
There is still a few American chestnut trees left in the park, but
it will be many years before the seedlings attain the 5-6 feet in
diameter size of their ancestors.
